Guided implant surgery

Digital planning and custom-made surgical guides can help achieve accurate implant positioning, with every procedure carefully planned around your individual clinical needs.

What it is

Guided implant surgery is a technique that uses digital imaging and computer-assisted planning to help determine the position of dental implants before surgery.

By combining a 3D scan of your teeth and gums with detailed CBCT imaging of the jawbone, we can create a comprehensive digital representation of the treatment area. A custom-made surgical guide can then be produced to assist with implant positioning during surgery.

Who it is for

Guided implant surgery may be suitable for patients requiring replacement of one or more missing teeth, particularly where detailed planning of implant positioning is beneficial.

The decision to use a surgical guide depends on the individual clinical circumstances and will be discussed during your consultation.

Why we do it this way

Digital planning allows us to carefully assess the available jawbone, neighbouring teeth and important anatomical structures before surgery, helping us determine the most appropriate position, angle and depth for each implant.

Where appropriate, a custom-made surgical guide helps transfer this plan accurately during surgery, supporting precise and efficient implant placement.

In suitable cases, guided surgery may also allow for a less invasive approach, with smaller incisions and less disruption to the surrounding tissues. This can contribute to a shorter procedure, greater postoperative comfort and potentially faster recovery.

01

Consultation and Digital Assessment

We begin with a thorough consultation to assess your suitability for implant treatment and discuss the available options. If you wish to explore implant treatment further, digital scans of your teeth and gums, together with CBCT imaging where clinically indicated, provide detailed information about your jawbone and surrounding anatomical structures.

02

Digital Planning

Using specialised planning software, we combine the digital scans of your teeth and gums with detailed 3D images of your jawbone. This allows us to carefully plan the implant’s position, angle and depth, considering the available bone, neighbouring teeth and the intended final restoration. A custom-made surgical guide is then designed and manufactured to help transfer this plan during surgery.

03

Guided Placement

The implant is carefully placed under local anaesthetic, using the custom-made surgical guide to assist with accurate positioning. In suitable cases, this technique may allow for a less invasive procedure, with smaller incisions and less disruption to the surrounding tissues, potentially contributing to greater postoperative comfort and quicker recovery.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Things people ask us about Guided Implant Surgery

Will treatment hurt?

Almost everything we do is carried out under local anaesthetic, and we take time getting you comfortably numb before we start. If you would rather be more relaxed than that, sedation can be arranged — tell us when you book.

How long does an implant last?

With good hygiene and regular reviews, most implants are still doing their job fifteen years on and often a good deal longer. The crown on top may need replacing sooner than the implant itself.

What if I do not have enough bone?

This is one of the first things the 3D scan tells us. Where bone volume is short, grafting at the time of placement is usually enough. If it is not, we will say so and talk through the alternatives rather than press ahead.

Can I have the implant and crown on the same day?

Sometimes. Immediate placement suits certain cases well, but the implant needs to be stable enough to take a tooth straight away. We will only offer it where the planning says it is the right thing to do.

Do you offer sedation?

Treatment can be carried out under local anaesthetic alone, or with sedation if you would rather be more relaxed for the appointment.

We will talk the options through at your consultation and agree which one you are having before anything is booked.

Can I pay in instalments?

Implant treatment is planned over several appointments and the cost is spread across them, so it is not paid in full up front.

For treatments priced at £500 and over, we offer finance from 12 months up to 5 years.
